I received an email from an aunt a couple weeks ago letting me know that a cousin got engaged at Christmas and another was getting married 5 days after the email. The latter was going to be very small - no aunts, uncles or cousins - and the former is happening in June but again a very small wedding (not sure if that means no cousins). Having news delivered this way really lets you know where you fall on the totem pole - but that is a choice I've made. Oh, the joys of family.
Although my mom was moved away to Edmonton by my birth father when I was a wee girl, I understand now why my mom didn't move back. A wonderful continuation of family dysfunction where communication skills are practiced by ceasing to speak to one another rather than resolving anything. A few years later you start talking again, but you do not discuss anything from the past. The frightening thing is this appears to have become the norm in our society, replaced by what the norm should be. Does that mean dysfunction can become functional if it becomes an accepted practice within society? Oh oh ... too deep for a Sunday morning.
This has led me to wonder about me and my immediate family. Will we spend a lot of time together or will we lead our lives more separately only getting together for special occasions? If Dary and I were together, I think we would spend more than just special occasions together. Now that we're separated, I see the kids spending more time with their dad as they get older, and that's okay. I don't know why I think that, maybe because I know they miss him and would like to see him more. Maybe I'm wrong. Who knows.
I love my kids and would do almost anything for them. They are the most incredible people I've ever met, I think because I've known them since before anyone else, and I so enjoy seeing who they are becoming and the choices they make and the things they want to do. Now, that isn't to say they don't drive me crazy sometimes and constantly make me question my sanity or lack thereof, but that seems to be par for the course when I speak to other parents. Perhaps because there was just me and my mom for so long, I don't have a clear perception of family, but these three are sure teaching me. They like to spend time with family, and have learned from their dad the art of dealing with relatives, something I could certainly take a few more lessons on. We have encouraged them toward independence (sometimes kicking and screaming) and we're almost there! What this next phase is going to bring, I have no idea. All I know is that I am really no longer in control (like I ever was-ha!) as everyone in our house is making choices now that will affect their own lives and others too.
March already! Isn't that amazing? I didn't get my goddaughter's present out to her in time for her birthday Friday - Happy 14th K!! Your card is going out tomorrow. Hope you had a wonderful day!
Thanks to JFK at work for hooking me up with Pandora. I'm really enjoying it and have learned a few things.
- Click on the song title and you'll be taken to a website with more info.
- Click on the album cover and you can rate the song among other things. Choose dislike and the song will skip over for you to the next one (you can also do that with the arrows at the top though).
The very best thing about Pandora though is that you can listen at work!!!!!!!!!! There's no need to download anything (not that we can get it past the damn administrator privileges anyway) and if you choose to signup for an account you can access the stations you've setup anywhere! Very cool. They also have a blog for those of you interested in the deeper side of Pandora...
I feel the need to share with you again the incredible produce deals you are missing out on by not shopping at H&W Produce(9261 34 Avenue or 14083 Victoria Trail). Here is everything I bought: 2 containers of raspberries, large bag of naval oranges, 2 containers of tri-coloured grapes, 6 kiwis, large bag of apples, a purple onion, a medium bag of pickling cukes, 2 English cukes, 4 large green peppers, 3 large yellow peppers, 2 large orange peppers, 4 medium red peppers, 4 1lb bags of salad, 2 large bunches of celery, a bunch of green onions, a container of cherry tomatoes, 3 large bunches of broccoli, and fresh mushrooms. My cart was 3/4 full and absolutely everything was fresh and wonderful looking. Are you ready for how much I paid? $31.00. You should really go for a drive today...
Here is a link to an article on some frugal shopping spots.
