There's a lot of scary things going on throughout the world right now. Often I'll hear people say that things are worse than they used to be, but I think the media plays a huge part in this. 100 years ago people didn't find things out until months after they'd happened. As well, the media sometimes builds things up for shock value and ratings. Actually, quite often. Negativity is more predominant, with one or two feel good stories in a newscast. That's not to say there's not more crap going on in our world right now, however things that are "big news" nowadays were common place in the past. Racism wasn't reported on because it wasn't an issue. Same with LGBT articles - people "like that" were dealt with and there was no need to report on it. I'm not trying to say anything more than these were the "norms" of the past.
North Korea is damn scary. They need to maintain their government and Kim Jong-un's leadership must remain intact (their perspective, not ours), and the way to do that is to hit first. NK has repeatedly tested their missiles and has now threatened Guam. "... most experts agree that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's No. 1 goal is self preservation. For Kim, the pursuit of nuclear weapons and a missile program is a rational way to stave off attempts by the U.S. to overthrow his regime." (Mark Gollom, CBC) Jong-un is afraid of falling to the US the same as Saddam Hussein and Moammar Gadhafi. Anyone who isn't taking this seriously needs to give their head a shake. This man is damn scary. Jong-un challenged Trump again, which was meant as a "stern warning, launching a second ballistic missile test launch, placing US cities in range of an attack. The missile was aimed for maximum distance, flew for 47 minutes and 12 seconds, travelling approximately 1000 km. That proved NK could hit Alaska or New York without question.
On this side of the world, Trump sounds like a 12 year old making threats on the schoolyard. The US president warned to "unleash fire and fury like the world has never seen" on NK, but in another speech he followed up that the with "maybe it wasn't tough enough. They've been doing this to our country for a long time, for many years, and it's about time that somebody stuck up for people of this country and for the people of other countries. So if anything, maybe that statement wasn't tough enough." He then told reporters that NK "better get their act together or they're going to be in trouble like few nations ever have been in trouble in this world". I don't know - something about his speeches and the way he speaks just sound so juvenile. Having said that, we would definitely need the US's protection in the case of this escalating. Canadians shouldn't assume we're not on the radar. We could certainly face repercussions if Jong-un follows through on his threats.
Next is Charlottesville, Virginia. A scheduled "Unite the Right" rally of white nationalist and other ring-wing groups lead to death and injury when a car plowed into a group of counterprotesters. One woman was killed and 19 others were injured. As well, two Virginia State troopers were killed when the helicopter they were in, "assisting public safety resources with the ongoing situation in Charlottesville", crashed.
Horrendous.
Let's have a feel good story now. Peanut came yesterday to stay with Granny and have a sleepover. We played, coloured, read, watched Bubble Guppies, went to the playground and then had supper. Ari had a bath and was asking to go to bed at 7:30 PM. Lol. Granny held her off until 8:00 PM and she flaked out pretty good. She slept until 8:45 AM - she's an amazing sleeper - although she stole all the blankets and had to be touching Granny all night. I don't mind the snuggles - it's not going to last forever. Plus she usually sleeps with Opa and I get Hendrix, so it was a special treat.
Here are a few shots of Ari. I've got a couple of good vids too, but can't get them to upload on here. Not sure why.
