I think DBR had a good birthday. He had a few phone calls, a couple of cards, some presents and an awesome DQ ice cream cake. (As an aside, kind of sad that when I go to their website and click Canada, it still keeps the 'Locate a Store' default country as United States. Hmmm...) We were chatting a little later and he said, "You know, Mom, birthdays aren't as exciting when you get older. It's just another day." Yes, son, each day is really only what we make it. With everything around him, DBR chose to have a good day and that’s awesome! (Saturday is coming soon…more news to follow on that.)
I know my kids are getting tired of hearing about choices, but I'm going to rant for a bit. (Check out Bear's Rants.) We really do choose what kind of day we're going to have. There are a lot of circumstances that will come up throughout the day that may affect your choices, but it is still a choice. Lost your job? You can choose to sit at home or head right back out and find another one or take a break and then look again. Broke your leg? You can choose to help yourself heal by getting enough nutrition, rest and exercise, or you can wallow around all day feeling sorry for yourself and waiting for others to take pity on you. I am getting so tired of hearing, “It’s not MY fault.” Something happened with the rearing of some that causes them to take absolutely no ownership for things they say, do, etc. Absolutely everything is someone else’s fault. I heard that a couple received hefty tickets because their plates hadn’t been renewed and their pink cards had expired. They are p.o.’d out by the fact that the police towed their vehicle when the tags were only 14 days overdue and the pink card was temporary and had expired last week. The excuses they gave included them both working full time during the week and couldn’t get their registration completed so that’s not their fault (aren’t registry places open on Saturday?), and their insurance company didn’t send the permanent cards so that’s not their fault (my cards usually arrive a good month ahead of time) and the bloody nerve of the police to leave them stranded on Whyte Avenue in the rain (so the police are supposed to taxi the owner home as they tow the car?). Unfortunately, this is something I’m hearing more and more all the time. “It’s not my fault, THEY ________ (fill in the blank). It is becoming so uncommon for people to take responsibility for themselves and their lives, but lookout when someone tries to take AWAY one of their “rights”! What have we neglected to teach our children or allow them to experience that has caused this? Is it because we don’t allow them to experience consequences the way we did? Is it because we always want better for our children than we had, so perhaps we over-indulge them? I don’t know the answer but I do know that most of us have been bitten by the notmyfault bug at one time or another. Try to remember that you face the consequences (good, bad or otherwise) of your choices.
Well, the morning is passing quickly and I have got to get ready for the day. Take care, stay safe and smile! You woke up so there is something for you to do … now go figure out what that is.
Toodles!
