Only Five Shopping Days Left...

Christmas. That most wonderful time when merchants' eyes light up beginning after halloween in Canada and thanksgiving in the States. How many people really celebrate christmas for the christianity reason? I know in my family we celebrated christmas with santa and snowmen and lots of fun things - and I think there's something about a baby in there too. Then when we met my step-dad, his family celebrated the religiousness of the day complete with traditions and going to Mass. Being a Canadian kid and growing up in Clareview, I had an idea there were different celebrations that happened in November and December but it was harder to understand why some friends did one thing while another did something different. I've since learned a bit more of different customs and look forward to learning more in the years to come.

What do you during this holiday season? Do you celebrate something because of religious reasons or because of family traditions or do you just say screw it all and you don't want to take part in any of it? I know some people who appear "strong in their faith" who do not celebrate their saviour's birth, while others who have never "celebrated" anything more than the wonder of snowflakes being unique very much enjoy all the holidays have to offer through giving and sharing of both time and resources.

I really don't think it matters what you do or why you do it; I would like to see more toleration and patience - of those who celebrate differently, who worship, or who just gather for the sake of gathering. None are right or wrong - they're equal in their importance to those people. This day has been made into so much more by merchants - and everyone who participates in the holidays (regardless of reason) is guilty of feeding the bottomless pit of corporations' purses.

Regardless why you participate in the holiday season, please remember to give a little of those dollars you're so willing to part with to decorate the house or feed the family or put presents under the tree to someone somewhere anywhere. Try to remember that a pittance of what you are spending the holiday season would really help someone else. No matter how little you have there is always someone with less.

Toodles.
