Well not a race per se, but yet another step in the choice to live healthy or just for today. There are some things we need to stop and other things we need to start, some we need to add and others we need to take away. When we start to make choices to better ourselves physically and mentally then we show our true maturity and understanding of self-care and survival.
DBR has recently made some life choices that are leading him toward a very healthy future. He's stopped some things and has taken up running; he wants to run a half marathon this spring! He is up to 5 km now and will be tackling 6km soon. He says he is sleeping better and is mentally alert and is feeling really good about himself. He has also increased the amount of time he spends lifting weights, and is enjoying his changing physique, especially all the definition he's building into his arms. So, DBR says, "Momums, I'd like you to start running with me." I ask him what exactly he's trying to say and he replies that he just wants to see me get healthier than I am. I can appreciate that although I wish the little bugger would just worry about himself! Oh man. This is where you have to start walking the talk momums. This is where you make the choice to stand up to all the things you've preached about and actually make the choice to get healthier and think about your future and plan some goals or continue living just for the day and watching your waistline expand. "You said you were healthiest when you were moving, so get moving again!" This kid is sure opinionated; I wonder where he gets that from? I was looking back at my posts and trying to remember when I wrote about the 30 minutes of exercise versus 60 minutes or none but I can't find it. So, I can procrastinate more and more (maybe even publish some extra things on my blog - that always keeps me busy) or I can get off my spreading ass and get things started. And the choice I made is ...
As an aside, do you have any idea what it is like trying to type and having a three pound beast jumping at your leg and throwing her baby at you? It can get very distracting when she just doesn't stop! When I have the audacity to ignore her, she proceeds to whine a little as she bounces off my leg and if that doesn't work she begins to woof in her loudest voice. So, something that should take me a very short time to compose is actually taking a very LONG time to compose. :-)
I went to the store last night under the pretense of searching for some stocking stuffers for the kids. I wound my way through the store, avoiding that area that I knew I had really gone there for, and picked up a variety of things. My arms were full with presents for the kids' stockings and some air freshener, because I neglected to pick up a basket at the front of the store. (It would be really good for them to put baskets throughout the store rather than just at the front.) So, having procrastinated enough, I headed to back of the store and into the shoe section. I found a little bench and set everything down to begin looking at runners. Now, I know very little about the different types of running shoes but the one thing I do remember a friend telling me is that the shoes should have really good support and padding in the soles, but they should be as light as possible. So, I start snooping for the first challenge I have - a wide width. There are actually quite a few shoes that come in wide, but it depends where you buy them. (Payless is one of the best for having true wide width shoes for a reasonable price, especially dress shoes.) Anyway, I found a couple of pairs that weren't outragiously priced and set about trying on my right foot. Well, the first one out of the box (7 1/2W) fit like a glove. They were $40 down to $30 and that was nice, so I put them on the bench with my other goodies. I tried on a couple more but found nothing with as good support and light and that I could tighten properly. So, I begin heading around the store, talking to myself (in my head this time-LOL) about the shoes and how I really don't have the money and how I should be buying more things for the kids and oh, will I actually ever use them and maybe I'll put them back (heading back towards the shoe section) and oh look there are some things the kids might like and (glancing at my watch) oh it's almost time to pick up KVS from work so I'd best get to the till and ... I could just set them down here, no, I need them, [do you get the feeling I have more in common with my little dog that I realize?] "Did you find everything you were looking for?" "Yes, thank you," and they're rung through the till so the decision is made.
I get home and tell DBR what I bought myself from them for Christmas. He asks if I'm going to break them in, especially during this cold snap (he knows me too well - that I won't leave the house to do much of anything while it's this freakin' cold out), and I say that I was planning on getting onto the elliptical while it's cold out so that when it gets warmer I will be able to go out with him. He says that is a great idea, much better than putting them away in the closet until it warms up - in July right (right mom) and then leaves it at that. (I love how this kid got that great part of his dad!)
Now it's time to put up or shut up. If I stop a few other things, I will easily save the cost of the shoes within a week. If I start some things, like the damn elliptical (can you hear the excitement in my statement?), rather than drinking coffee and reading the paper for 30 minutes in the morning, then that will be 30 minutes more exercise than I'm getting now. And if I can do 30 minutes when I get home from work, maybe in front of Oprah or something (provided I actually get out of work on time), then that will be 60 minutes a day. I can realistically do that 4 out of 7 days of the week, so that's a good starting goal. I'm going to do some weight and measurements later on (not sure if I really want to post those just yet) and Let's Get It Started!
Kids are starting to stir, so I'd best get up and start moving. Take care of yourselves.
Toodles for now.
