Twyla's note: Looking back, Mom's behaviour is consistent with a brain injury.
Mom,
Hi there. I'll just continue from last night. Kiershyn is a very good baby. She gets up once or twice a night, but goes right back to sleep after eating. She isn't collicky and gets rid of her gas quite well. I'm really enjoying her a lot.
It seems to be taking me forever to write this letter. It's already 1:30 and I've only accomplished a few lines. Kiershyn is still awake and crying in her crib. She's lost her soother again. I'm going to get her and bring her downstairs.
Drey sure has adjusted well to her. He says her name as best as he can and pays a lot of attention to her. He hasn't been jealous at all and has had no tantrums or anything. I guess there are some advantages to having them close together.
Christmas was interesting this year. It was much different than any other I remember. You were home but you didn't want to open any presents. You've been really sick lately. You can't keep anything down. It's like you don't want to get better. (1/1/91 6:35 PM)
I talked to Dad earlier today. He's just finished nights. I guess they aren't letting you out because you're getting so sick and not eating. You can't even keep juice down anymore.
Anyways, Christmas was interesting. After we opened presents, you went back to bed, Dad and Dary made breakfast, and I fed Kiershyn. I then got my turkey in the oven and you and Dad slept until about 4:00 PM. You didn't want any supper and went back to sleep.
We were going to go home, but ended up staying until Boxing Day. We played cards (you and the kids were sleeping) and went to bed around midnight.
You sure have changed a lot. Everyone is so used to you being happy and bubbly, and you're nothing like that anymore. the guys went to a hockey game last Thursday (Santa put tickets in their stockings) and you stayed with me. I tried to talk with you about eating and stuff like that. I don't know if you'll remember anything I said, but I hope you'll get better.
I also felt it necessary to talk to you about how you treat Dad. You harass him so much right now. I thought it was because of the operations and that the way you acted towards Dad was the way you acted with everyone. I've since found out that this isn't true. Once Dad enters the room, you change. You start in on him about going home and other things. I wish you wouldn't because I know it makes him feel bad, cause he has to say no.
It seems like ages have gone by since you first got sick. Dad brought up the camcorder and I've been taping the kids. Dad's birthday party was on one of the tapes (I put it on a normal tape). It was only a few weeks ago, but it seems like a few years. I understand why people keep pictures around of people they've lost; I couldn't remember what you used to be like until I watched that! That's pretty scary! I guess it'll be best, becaue you may be different than before once you're better. We'll just have to wait and see.
I hope I wasn't too harsh with you when you were here. I asked you if I was pissing you off and you said yes. I said that was good because you'd do it to me if things were the other way around, and I'm sure you would.
Well, now for the other news. Terry has said she's coming down to see you for quite a few weeks now, but has yet to show. She and Cliff got engaged on Christmas. I guess they'll probably get married this summer. Terry wants to start a baby to arrive in '92, so I guess they'll get married for sure this year.
Shooshie hasn't had the baby yet. Should be within the next couple of weeks. I've already got some things for her baby and will get more once the rugrat arrives. I guess she figures labour will be a piece of cake. I sure hope she does have an easy time.
Granny was in the hospital. She's been having trouble caring for herself. They did an assessment on her and found out that everything is fine except her back. They're going to check what her need of care is and then she'll have to go to a nursing home. Auntie Flo is going down to be with her.
Auntie Deb is starting a new job right away. She'll be working 7 days, 7 off, 5 days, 2 off. Once the baby comes, she'll be down for a few days, probably in the a few weeks.
Nana called today. She was wondering where you were. She called home thinking you'd be there. I explained everything to her.
I'm signing off for now. I'll write more when I have a chance.
I love you. Twyla (8:15 PM)
